DCA strategy (Dollar Cost Averaging) is popular in the crypto world for one fundamental reason: Bitcoin and altcoins are extremely volatile, and regular purchases turn this volatility to the investor's advantage. But does the same apply to stocks? Does it make sense to invest using the DCA method into an S&P 500 ETF or a global index just as you would with Bitcoin?

The answer is "yes, but with important differences" - and it is precisely these differences that determine how your DCA strategy for stocks should look.

Basic difference: Volatility

DCA works best with higher volatility. That is a mathematical fact. The more the price fluctuates, the more units you buy during dips, resulting in a lower average purchase price compared to a single lump-sum purchase.

Asset Average annual volatility Typical maximum drawdown DCA Advantage
Bitcoin (BTC) 70-90 % −70 to −85 % Very high
Ethereum (ETH) 80-100 % −80 to −92 % Very high
S&P 500 ETF 15-20 % −35 to −57 % Medium
World Index (MSCI World) 13-17 % −30 to −50 % Medium
Gold Fund (GLD) 12-16 % −20 to −40 % Lower

The table shows that while DCA works for shares, The mathematical advantage of averaging is lower. than with crypto. This doesn't mean DCA makes no sense for stocks, on the contrary, for long-term investing in index ETFs it is likely the best approach for retail investors. But don't expect the same effect as with Bitcoin.

Time horizon: The key difference

For crypto DCA, a typical horizon is 2-4 years (one "cycle"). For equity DCA, the optimal horizon significantly longer: 10, 15, 20 years. Why?

Stock markets grow more slowly than crypto, but also decline less dramatically and recover faster in each cycle. The S&P 500 has returned to new highs after every major drop, 2008, 2020. Historically, it has delivered an average annual return of around 10% (in USD) before inflation. Achieving such a return requires time and patience.

Rule: Money you need within three years does not belong in stocks, even with DCA. DCA for stocks is a strategy for capital you do not need in the short term. Crypto DCA can yield results in 2-3 years, but carries higher risk.

Tax aspects for Czech investors

This is an area where stocks and crypto differ fundamentally, and where Czech investors must be particularly vigilant.

Promotions and ETFs: A three-year time test

Under Czech legislation (Income Tax Act, Section 10), the following applies to securities, including ETF shares, time testif you hold a security for more than 3 years, the profit from its sale is exempt from income tax. This is a significant advantage for DCA investors with a long-term horizon. You regularly purchase ETFs, and after three years from each purchase, the profit from that specific purchase is tax-free.

Be careful: with DCA you purchase on different days, so each purchase has its own three-year inspection. Maintaining records is therefore essential. You need to know exactly when each part was purchased.

Crypto: No automatic time test

For cryptocurrencies, the three-year holding period for tax exemption is still in place. not valid - Income from crypto sales is generally taxable as "other income" regardless of holding period (income up to 100 000 Kč per year is exempt, but this is insufficient for active DCA investors). Discussions on legislative changes are taking place in 2025-2026, but currently crypto remains less favourable than shares in this regard.

ETF DCA and annual tax payments

When regularly buying ETFs through a brokerage account, you must report each sale in your tax return unless the time test applies. Recommended strategy: buy, don't give away, wait 3+ years. Every sale from three years ago cannot avoid taxation.

ETF DCA strategy: S&P 500 vs global index

For a Czech-focused DCA stock investor, the two most popular choices are:

S&P 500 ETF (for example, iShares Core S&P 500 UCITS ETF - CSPX)

500 largest US companies, historical average return ~10 % p.a. In USD. Concentration on the USA - if the US market lags behind the rest of the world, your portfolio will lag too. Available on exchanges such as Xetra or LSE via brokerage platforms (Degiro, Trading 212, IBKR).

MSCI World ETF (for example, Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF - VWRA)

Approximately 3,700 stocks from around the world (the USA accounts for ~65%, the rest Europe, Japan, emerging markets). Greater diversification, similar historical returns to the S&P 500, but with lower risk concentration in a single country.

Recommendations for Czech investors: For long-term DCA (10+ years), the MSCI World ETF is a more conservative and diversified choice. The S&P 500 has delivered higher returns over the last decade, but past performance does not guarantee future results. Both options are significantly more sensible than selecting individual stocks for a DCA strategy.

Historical backtest: DCA into the S&P 500 over the last 20 years

What would happen if a Czech investor had invested 2 000 Kč monthly in an S&P 500 ETF from 2005 onwards (converted via the CZK/USD exchange rate)?

Scenario Total inserted Portfolio value (01/2026) Value enhancement
DCA since 01/2005 (20 years) 480 000 Kč ~3 200 000 Kč +567 %
DCA since 01/2010 (15 years) 360 000 Kč ~1 900 000 Kč +428 %
DCA from 01/2015 (10 years) 240 000 Kč ~720 000 Kč +200 %
DCA from 01/2020 (5 years) 120 000 Kč ~210 000 Kč +75 %

The data are illustrative and based on historical returns of the S&P 500 in USD with an approximate conversion to CZK. Key conclusion: Timing in the market beats timing the market A longer horizon delivers significantly better results than precise timing of entry.

When does DCA work best for stocks?

DCA for stock markets is most effective in these situations:

DCA for stocks versus crypto: A summary for the Czech investor

DCA strategy works for both asset types, but with different characteristics. Crypto DCA offers higher potential returns due to greater volatility, but also carries higher risk and less favourable tax treatment. Stock DCA via ETF is more conservative, tax-advantageous after three years, and suitable for a very long-term horizon.
